The Artistic Crafts at Vever

Les métiers d'art chez Vever

The hands that shape the exceptional: the artistic crafts of the House of Vever

A Vever jewel is never the work of one pair of hands alone. Since 1821, each creation has passed through a succession of rare skills, handed down from workshop to workshop, where metal learns to breathe and stone to capture the light. Behind every piece are names we may not always know, but whose talent is the House’s true signature: engravers, stone setters, polishers and enamellers. These are the artisans to whom we entrust our exacting standards.

The engraver, sculptor of material

Before a jewel can come to life, it must first take shape. That is the work of the engraver, who uses a succession of chisels to carve, sculpt and texture gold or platinum, giving it movement. A petal, the vein of a leaf, the curve of a wing: under their hands, a drawing gains dimension and a designer’s sketch becomes living material. This work demands extraordinary patience and a sculptor’s eye, born of skills that French high jewellery has cultivated for generations.

The stone setter, guardian of the unseen

To set a stone is to hold it securely without ever constraining it. The stone setter adjusts every prong, every pavé setting and every mount to a tenth of a millimetre, allowing light to pass through the gem unobstructed. There is a paradox to this work: perfection means becoming invisible. A successful setting goes unnoticed — all you see is the stone, suspended as if weightless.

The polisher, who gives jewellery its finishing touch

Long considered an understated craft, polishing is nevertheless the step that gives a jewel its final surface. It reveals the lustre of gold, softens every edge and creates the deep, mirror-like finish found on all our pieces. Meticulous polishing can take hours for a single creation — the time needed for the material to reveal its true character.

The enameller, master of fire

Among all our artisans, the enameller holds a special place in the House’s history. Henri Vever was one of the pioneers of translucent enamelling in the late 19th century, a demanding technique in which colour owes as much to fire as it does to pigment. Today, we carry on this heritage alongside Sandrine Tessier, a Meilleure Ouvrière de France. Her family workshop — founded by her grandparents and awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant designation — embodies a French excellence that few artisans still master.

A constellation of artisans, united by one exacting standard

Engravers, stone setters, polishers and enamellers: different crafts, each representing a life devoted to a singular skill, practised until perfected. Working with them is Vever’s way of remaining true to what has always defined us — jewellery in which the human hand is never erased by the machine, and every piece bears the subtle imprint of those who brought it to life.

At Vever, excellence is not simply proclaimed: it is passed on, gesture by gesture, as it has been since 1821.
